    Theoretical meetings include Dr. Larmore for a serious boost of brainpower.
    They will start October 12th.

What is UNLV ACM?

We are the UNLV student chapter of the oldest computing organization in the world.   ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the arts, sciences, and applications of information technology.   With a world-wide membership ACM is a leading resource for computing professionals and students working in the various fields of Information Technology, and for interpreting the impact of information technology on society.

As a student orginazation, we invite all who are interested in computers and computer science to participate.   Our goal is to provide opportunities for you to meet and learn from students, faculty, and professionals.   It's a great way to see what the IT Industry has to offer you.

Constitution and Bylaws

Article I — Name

  1. This organization shall be called the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, also referred to as UNLV ACM.

Article II — Purpose

  1. The chapter is organized and will be operated exclusively for educational and scientific purposes with the following specific purposes:
    1. To promote an increased knowledge of the science, design, development, construction, language, and applications of modern computing machinery;
    2. To promote a greater interest in computing machinery and its applications; and
    3. To provide a means of communication between persons having interest in computing machinery.
  2. The above purposes will be fulfilled by the means of discussions, lectures, projects, publications, affiliation with professionals in the field, and association with a professional organization, specifically the Association for Computing Machinery.

Article III — Membership

  1. This chapter does not discriminate in the selection of members or appointments when discrimination is defined as denying individuals membership or appointment on the basis of a person's age, race, national origin, color, gender, creed, handicap, place of residence, or sexual orientation.
  2. This student organization shall consist of at least four currently enrolled student members. Non-students will be allowed to participate in any student organization activity, but will not be an elected or appointed officer of said organization. A non-student is someone who is not currently enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for the fall or spring semester.
  3. Membership in this chapter is open to all persons who are currently enrolled as full-time undergraduate or graduate students, as defined by the standards of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
  4. A full-time student at University of Nevada, Las Vegas may, upon request and payment of dues, become a voting member of this chapter.
  5. A full-time student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas may, upon request and payment of dues, become a non-voting affiliate member of this chapter.

Article IV — Officers

  1. The officers of this chapter shall be president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. Each officer is to be a member in good standing of UNLV ACM and be a student of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
  2. The officers shall be elected at the annual election meeting. They shall take office one month after the election meeting and serve until their successor takes office one month after the following election meeting. During the month interim, the newly elected officers will serve as assistants to the previously elected officers. They will attend all of the meetings and begin to take on the lesser responsibilities of their offices. At the end of the month-long period, the new officers will take on the full responsibilities of their new positions. If a special election is required during the year, the circumstances that require the special election will determine how long the delay period before the newly elected officer takes over, this period shall not exceed one month in length.
  3. Vacancies in any office other than chairman caused by resignation, removal, or disability, shall be filled by majority vote of the Executive Council. If the office of chairman is so vacated, the vice-chairman shall immediately assume that office, and the Executive Council shall then fill the vacant office of vice-chairman.

Article V — Duties of Officers

  1. The president shall preside at all meetings of this chapter. The president shall represent this chapter at all meetings with the ACM regional representative. The chairman shall also appoint all committees of this chapter and committee chairman.
  2. The vice-president shall assume the duties of the chairman in event of the chairman's absence. The vice-president shall assume those duties of the chairman that are so delegated by the vice-president.
  3. The secretary shall keep minutes of all chapter meetings. The secretary shall prepare the annual chapter report for presentation to this chapter at the annual election meeting and prepare the reports to the president. The secretary shall send official notification to ACM headquarters of changes in the elected officers or in the chapter sponsor of this chapter. The secretary shall send official notification to the executive director of ACM of any proposed changes in this chapter's bylaws for approval prior to their distribution to the membership. The secretary shall similarly notify the executive director promptly of the final action of the proposed changes.
  4. The treasurer shall collect dues and maintain financial and membership records. The treasurer shall make the annual report of this chapter's finances required by the treasurer of the ACM.

Article VI — Faculty Advisor

  1. The faculty advisor shall be nominated by the chapter officers immediately following the annual election meeting. The chapter sponsor shall serve until a successor is appointed.
  2. The faculty advisor shall be a faculty or professional staff member of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Article VII — Organizational Structure

  1. The Executive Council and its duties:
    1. The Executive Council shall consist of the present officers, the faculty advisor, all committee chairmen, and the immediate past chairman.
    2. The Executive Committee shall act on all matters not requiring full membership participation. Minutes of the Executive Committee meetings shall be available for inspection by any member of this Chapter and shall be filed with the Chapter records.
    3. The Executive Committee shall meet at least once a month, and any time at the discretion of the chairman or at the request of any member of the Executive Council.

Article VIII — Meetings

  1. Meetings shall be held as planned by the chapter officers. All members shall be notified at least one week in advance.
  2. This chapter may hold meetings only in places that are open to all members of UNLV ACM.
  3. The annual election meeting shall be held during the spring term of every year.
  4. Minutes of the meeting and a roster of attendance shall be recorded by the secretary, and shall be available on demand to any chapter member.
  5. A quorum shall be defined as fifty percent of the current membership.
  6. Special meetings shall be called at any time deemed necessary by the Executive Committee or the faculty advisor. A special meeting may be called by a petition signed by one-half of the membership.

Article IX — Disbursement and Dues

  1. Disbursements from the treasury for chapter expenditures shall be made under authorization of the Executive Council and be included in the minutes of that meeting. All monies will be handled through the treasurer.
  2. Annual dues shall be set by the Executive Council each semester. Annual dues shall not exceed a total of $10.00 during any given year.

Article X — International Affiliation

  1. The international organization with which this Chapter is affiliated is the Association for Computing Machinery.
  2. The manner of affiliation is that of independent student/local chapter.
  3. This affiliation is based upon submittal of a Chapter Constitution voted on by the members of the Chapter and the approval of said Constitution by the international organization.
  4. Although affiliated with the international organization membership to the local chapter is independent of membership to the international organization and vice versa. Neither organization requires the fees of the other for membership. They are otherwise financially independent.
  5. The affiliation with the international organization maybe revoked only via dissolution by the international ACM. The local Chapter may not disassociate itself from the international ACM by any means short of self-dissolution and establishment of a new organizational entity.

Article XI — Amendments

  1. Amendments to these bylaws require previous notification to the chapter membership and two-thirds affirmative vote of those present for its adoption.

Article XII — Dissolution

  1. Dissolution of the chapter by consent of the members shall consist of unanimous agreement of all its officers together with a majority vote at a meeting. Such a meeting must be publicized in advance to all members of the chapter. Should the chapter be dissolved its assets and liabilities shall be transferred to ACM and shall be supervised by the Local Activities Board.
